Celebrating two decades of Fam Irvoll’s optimistic, spirited and known to be humorous visual commentary, her SS27 show looks equally backwards on her creative journey and forward to her continued experimentations with design. Previously unveiled in Oslo, the Norweigan designer presents the celebratory collection to London with nostalgic references to the Club Kid era and personal experiences from the rampant times of nightclubbing. Irvoll graciously spotlights grad designer Rebekka Meldrøy and her brand House of Meldrøy, working together to create a fusion of imagination that challenges conventional ways of thinking all things fashion and finding enjoyment within it.
Having fun with fashion and getting back in touch with your inner child becomes an encouragement from the brand’s unswerving visual language. Girlish gem embellishments remind us of former childhood years playing dress up with clothing and the mischievous urge to bedazzle everything within sight and possession. In a world that often encourages you to blend in and fit into the trends laid out before you, Fam Irvoll encourages being a maximalist and unapologetically so.

Club attire is reinterpreted through a sporty lens of collegiate badges elevated with bling and a playlist of continual club classics, transporting us to the Club Kid era. The notable return of 3d flowers on gowns revisits techniques and visuals from Irvoll’s early career, placing them into a contemporary wardrobe where her past self and present-day self meet. Polka dots are proportionally enlarged, and graphics of bras and panties are printed onto bodycon dresses and vest tops giving us x-ray vision. In true Fam Irvoll fashion, playful motifs collide with vivid and bold colour palettes, reminding us to not take ourselves or our wardrobes too seriously.
It’s a collection that sits comfortably amongst the scope of designers at London Fashion Week, offering respite from collections of a more serious nature and allowing craftsmanship to gel excitably with pop culture. Fam Irvoll is creating collections that are designed to not only be seen and experienced, but above all enjoyed. Grab your nearest glue gun and order a set of gemstones, nonchalant is out and maximalism is in, the inner child in us is delighted about it.
