NOSAKHARI | A Djembe Story

Bringing a touch of West African culture to their latest collection, London-based brand NOSAKHARI launch ‘A Djembe Story’. Born in Nigeria, the luxury labels founder and creative director Nosakhare Osadolor incorporates the history and heritage of his continent with this collection of leather bags, designed with details of the iconic instrument in mind and handcrafted to mirror the creation of the Djembe drum, traditionally carved from a single tree trunk.

Launching NOSAKHARI’s newest range of accessories through an immersive showcase on Mackintosh Lane in Hackney, the evening incorporated a celebration of culture as Nosakhare’s collection intends to. Inviting artist, all with a collective passion and aim centred around preserving the art of West African drumming to perform, attendees found themselves united by fashion, mirroring the same sense of community that the Djembe drum has been able to create for so many centuries.

Speaking on his latest line of designs, Nosakhare, also known as Nosa, said, “Originally intended only for communication, the Djembe drum was the iPhone of its time and today it has evolved to serve as a celebratory symbol for many. Amid such historically pivotal times, in which civilisation is divided by ideologies and war, we wanted to create something that resonates a peaceful message.”

Modernising the ancient instrument, Nosakhare, combines the minimalistic aesthetics of the NOSAKHARI brand to form what is perhaps one of their most poetically unique pieces to date, not to mention yet another testament to the artistry that has been synonymous with the label since its inception in 2013. A symbol of communication and hope, the power of the Djembe drum is preserved within a contemporary, wearable work of art, conceptualised by the careful craftmanship NOSAKHARI is best known for, another notable nod to the instrument and human creativity associated with it.

With unification in mind, the unisex designs create no separation between genders. Wearers become one, wed by decades of the past in a present-day setting. “Amid such historically pivotal times, in which civilisation is divided by ideologies and war, we wanted to create something that resonates a peaceful message. Because of our luxury know-how, we were able to turn this symbol into a seamless piece of design that imbues the worlds of art and music but also incorporates the work of highly skilled, dedicated hands.” Nosa says in a final word on the collection.
