A Spring Refresh at So.Shell Nail Bar

So.Shell has quickly built a reputation for its meticulous approach to nail care, specialising in the increasingly sought-after Ukrainian manicure technique. Known for its precision, longevity and immaculate finish, the treatment promises results that last upwards of four weeks, a major draw for anyone juggling a busy schedule.

Noctis Beauty Editor Charli Avery was kindly invited by So.Shell to experience the Ukrainian manicure for herself. Here’s how her appointment unfolded.

With six salons across the capital, I opted for their Covent Garden location. Tucked away down a cobbled side street, the space feels like a calm retreat from the surrounding bustle. Inside, natural, minimalist décor sets a serene tone. I was warmly welcomed by the team, offered a coffee, and invited to relax before meeting my nail artist, Yuliia.

Yuliia certainly had her work cut out for her! Grown-out gel, a snapped nail, and an overall sorry state that needed rescuing. After assessing the damage, we settled on a playful twist on a classic French tip: a soft nude base with neon orange tips (very me).

The first half of the appointment focused entirely on preparation, a hallmark of the Ukrainian manicure. An acrylic tip was carefully added to repair my broken nail, and the rest were reshaped to achieve a uniform length. Each nail was meticulously filed and coated in a strengthening nude gel before moving on to the design.

Notably, the entire process is completed dry, no soaking, foils or acetone.  All cuticle work performed using an electric drill, which is a technique that prioritises precision and, in my experience, often results in longer-lasting wear.  However,  it may feel unfamiliar if you’re used to traditional methods, just something to bear in mind.

Midway through, I was treated to a glass of prosecco, a welcome indulgence, while Yuliia painstakingly hand-painted the vibrant neon tips with impressive attention to detail.

In total, the appointment lasted around one hour and twenty minutes – slightly longer, and a little more of an investment, than a standard manicure. However, the level of care, craftsmanship and finish made it feel like a true luxury experience.

Now two weeks on, and after working four shows at London Fashion Week, my nails are still going strong. They’ve looked impeccable in countless backstage photographs and have attracted more compliments than I can count. The colour remains vibrant, the structure intact, and there’s none of the lifting I might typically expect by this point.

(We love a dramatic before and after shot)
