This Tuesday saw the announcement of a new major David Bowie production, David Bowie: You’re Not Alone, tracing the creative journey of the man behind the many masks. The 360° experience will debut at Kings Cross’ immersive exhibition space Lightroom on the 22nd of April. Featuring some of the most iconic performances from Bowie’s career, the hour-long show comprises of a series of thematic chapters exploring Bowie’s creative philosophy, as well as the relatable, funny and vulnerable man behind the often-Messianic figure presented today. With impressive spatial audio and 3D projections, for those of us too young to have witnessed Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, or the Thin White Duke in person, this is as close as you can get to being transported to a live David Bowie gig in 2026.
The announcement was celebrated at Lightroom on Tuesday evening with a six-minute preview of a section of the show, followed by a short panel with director Mark Grimmer and Lightroom’s executive producer David Sabel, hosted by NME’s Liberty Dunworth.
Bowie’s voice filled the cavernous exhibition space as the exterior of the Hammersmith Odeon surrounded us, the iconic venue where on the final date of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, Ziggy Stardust died on the 3rd of July 1973. As the walls ripped open and we entered the Odeon’s gloomy interior, footage of Bowie performing the classic ‘Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide’ enveloped each projected wall amidst swirling projections of deep purple, red and blue hues. Crooning, “give me your hands, you’re not alone!” shots of fans reaching out towards Bowie proved particularly memorable, a symbol of his larger-than-life performance persona, but also his humanity.
Mark, David and their teams have worked together on a plethora of projects pushing the boundaries of immersive storytelling in recent years, including last year’s David Hockney exhibition and their immersive fashion show Vogue: Inventing the Runway, both of which continue to feature in Lightroom’s other spaces across the globe. David Bowie: You’re Not Alone is the culmination of the pair’s pursuit of immersive storytelling through technology, architecture and narrative, as well as their first working with an artist posthumously, created in partnership and through close collaboration with the Bowie estate.
Working with those closest to Bowie, and between Washington and the recently relocated David Bowie Archives in the V&A Storehouse in Stratford, director Mark Grimmer revealed that they sifted through over 400 hours of audio materials and interviews, finding expressions of Bowie in his own words to build the show from. “The sculpture was carved from the stone” reflected executive producer David Sabel, whose team had access to rare, personal materials such as drawings, lyrics and notes. By taking a thematic, non-linear approach, the production team emphasised the reoccurring themes across Bowie’s life and discography, such as his consistent exploration of different creative outlets and approaches to songwriting.
We can do a different kind of storytelling here… it’s a communal experience.
It’s a production format fitting for a truly iconic musician and actor whose immersion in his own characters was legendary. Even for those less familiar with the visionary artist, the show celebrates Bowie as a champion of human creativity, with a lingering message that through art, we can best understand what it means to be alive. Opening on the 22nd of April, David Bowie: You’re Not Alone promises to deliver a unique audiovisual journey for David Bowie fans young and old alike.
