South London rap royalty Ms Banks today releases ‘WHY?’, the second single from her upcoming debut album ‘SOUTH LDN LOVER GIRL’.
‘WHY?’ is a heart-on-the-sleeve offering from Ms Banks, showcasing not only inward vulnerability, but a poignant and timely discussion of her experience as a Black woman from South London. As the title suggests, on ‘WHY?’ Banks poses as many questions as she answers. The versatility of her voice is showcased on the chorus, over rap production courtesy of OGB and AJ Productions.
Speaking on the track, Ms Banks says: “WHY? is super important to me, I feel like it’s the most honest I’ve been in a long time and to make it a single was pivotal, not just an album track. The love has already been immense and it’s nice to feel seen for who I truly am and ask the difficult questions, the only way I can find my tribe.”
The single drop comes alongside the announcement of the ‘SOUTH LDN LOVER GIRL Tour’, which will see Banks perform tracks from her debut album live for the very first time. The headline run will kick off on 10th April in Amsterdam, moving through Paris, Birmingham, Manchester and concluding on 23rd April at London’s Islington Assembly Hall.
A decade into her career, Ms Banks is stepping into a new era with fresh confidence and a clear vision. With the release of her first full-length body of work ‘SOUTH LDN LOVER GIRL’, she is reaffirming her place as a trailblazer for women in the UK rap scene. It’s a career-defining collection of songs that sees her pushing outside of her comfort zone. This is Ms Banks at her most vulnerable, mature and transparent.
Effortlessly gliding between rapping and singing over hip hop and Afrobeats-infused production, on ‘SOUTH LDN LOVER GIRL’, Banks embraces every facet of her artistry; the sharp lyricist, the life of the party, the introspective storyteller and the lover girl. Lyrically, the album centres around Banks’ experiences growing up as a second generation African descendent and young Black girl in South London.
You never really see the words South London and lover girl put together, unfortunately us girls from South have a bad rep. My environment may have a part to play as to why I am so hard and so stern but deep down inside, there is a girl that wants to love and be loved. This is definitely the most vulnerable I’ve ever been on a project and just being honest about how life feels from my perspective, some past, some present.
Lead single ‘4C’ is a confident, empowering anthem celebrating Black womanhood, self-love, and authenticity, centred on reclaiming pride in natural 4C hair. Elsewhere on the album, Banks highlights the complexities of love and relationships, painting vivid narratives of connection and heartbreak. On the powerful title track, she offers a raw perspective on how crime and addiction can derail lives, particularly for women navigating those realities. The energy shifts on tracks like Strandz-assisted ‘WAR OUTSIDE’ and the assertive ‘NO LOVE’ featuring Tiggs da Author, exuding Banks’ signature confidence and effortless delivery, a stark reminder of why she’s been a mainstay in the UK scene.
