Sara Angel is a Mexican-American singer-songwriter bringing a fresh and soulful edge to her pop foundations. Raised in Texas amongst a musical family: her mother, Christian artist Priscila Angel, and Gustavo Angel, Los Temerarios frontman, her father. Through honesty and a love for innovating on her sound with each release, Sara has garnered a loyal following. We caught up to peel back the layers on that raw vulnerability and cinematic charm.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What first compelled you to start writing your own songs?
I grew up surrounded by music, so it was almost impossible not to fall in love with it. I started writing in third grade. Despite them being silly little tunes, they made me realise how much I loved telling stories through music. Songwriting became the place where I could be completely honest, even about things I wouldn’t normally say out loud.
‘what’s love?’ is a beautiful song; you really pour your story and emotions into it. Do you find it easy to write so openly?
Thank you. Songwriting has always felt like therapy for me. I might hold back in regular conversations, but with my notes app open and a piano in front of me… everything just spills out. Sometimes it feels almost too honest, but I’ve learned that the songs that scare me the most to share are usually the ones people connect with the most.
You made your debut in 2023; it’s great to see you still pushing the boundaries. Do you feel that your songwriting has matured and improved over the years?
Definitely. I can still hear the younger me in my early songs, but that’s part of the journey. Over time, I’ve learned how to take feelings and shape them into something that makes sense to me and also resonates with others. I’ve also become more playful about blending languages, sounds, and styles. I don’t limit myself anymore.
What is the proudest moment in your career so far?
There have been so many little pinch-me moments, but this year has felt especially meaningful. I made it onto my first couple of Spotify editorial playlists, which was such a cool milestone. One of my original songs also passed 100,000 streams faster than anything I’ve released before. They might seem like small steps, but I really believe in celebrating every single one. I’ve also had the chance to work with people I admire and learn from them, which has probably been my favourite part. I love listening, learning, and growing, and I feel incredibly grateful to everyone who has taken a chance on me and helped me move closer to my goals.
Your music and discography are quite diverse; you can really tell that you’ve had a strong musical education. Is there a sound or genre that you hope to explore in the future?
I love that you picked up on that. Pop will always be the foundation of what I do, but I’ve been having so much fun blending it with Latin and R&B influences. Songs like ‘Viper’ and ‘Echo’ show the moodier side of that mix, and I’d love to keep experimenting. My dream is to create music that people can cry to at two in the morning and still dance to at the same time.
