The most heartfelt lyrics and performances are born out of a place of unhinged vulnerability and letting go of the rawest personal thought processes. Aphrah‘s recent single, ‘Silhouette,’ initially inspired by the word itself, taps into the dismissal and relevance of body sizes.
The Kent-based artist officially launched a new chapter with the first teaser in the form of ‘Silhouette,’ as the first single from her upcoming debut EP. This forthcoming compilation of songs will uncover healing themes and mental health challenges.
‘Silhouette’ is built on the empowering message of ‘you are more than just your body.’ A level of melancholy throughout the track achieves a freeing sensation, disregarding societal pressures and encouraging a new sense of self-love.
With ‘Silhouette,’ Aphrah takes a moment to use her voice as an opportunity to speak to all those putting too much importance on their body size instead of loving themselves for who they are.
Congratulations on your new single ‘Silhouette.’ Can you share what inspired you to tackle the topic of body image?
Thank you. I was originally inspired by just the word Silhouette and thinking about what it could mean as just showing an outline of someone and not everything that makes them as a person. That there is more to us than our body size and wanting to create a song that felt empowering to listen to.
What is the main messaging behind the track you want to leave the listener with?]
That they are more than enough.
How did you feel recording this song?
It felt quite vulnerable and raw at first but then empowering and freeing by the end.
Why did you choose this track as the first teaser from your upcoming debut EP?
It’s bold with its message and not like anything I’ve released before so I wanted to just go for it with the first single.
What other themes were you adamant to touch upon on this new project?
The whole EP looks at themes of mental health, mainly written in the aftermath of the pandemic but with messages of hope, healing and comfort.
Can you recall the first moments you felt passionate about music?
As a child I loved singing and dancing and used to buy copies of Smash Hits and save the lyrics! I loved singing along to the radio and the UK top 40 on a Sunday afternoon.
Who was the most encouraging when you were first thinking of pursuing this career?
Lots of my friends that have been there since day one and came to all my gigs.
As a singer/songwriter, what were you most afraid of?
Sharing my lyrics as it’s like someone reading your diary.
What artist do you look up to the most?
Kate Bush. She is in a league of her own.
What were some lessons you already picked up throughout your journey?
Stay true to yourself and keep releasing music no matter what.
Besides music, where do you get your dopamine hits?
Walks in nature and dancing.
What are you manifesting for yourself and your career?
That my songs would be the soundtrack to people’s lives.
