Chelcee Grimes knows all about making hit records, having penned tracks for some of today’s biggest pop artists. The talented singer/songwriter is now doing things on her own terms and Noctis spoke to her following the release of her new singe.
Tell us about your new single “Time To Talk.”
Time To Talk, is a proud pop record about sitting down with a ex and getting closure on the relationship. Talk about all the good, the bad, the ugly & everything In between.
You have written for artists such as Dua Lipa, Jonas Blue and Tom Walker. Do you feel the pressure to match their success, and what’s the difference between writing a song for yourself rather than another artist?
No, I don’t feel any pressure as we’re all so different and every single artist is. We’re all just here creating and trying to be the best we can be. The difference between writing for somebody and writing for myself is that I usually try to tap into their world when I know it’s not for me. When I write for myself I try to dig deeper and write about my life whole heartedly. I can’t lie in my music.
What can fans expect from your debut album?
The truth & nothing but the truth. Storytelling pop music & I hope people can laugh, cry, dance & hear themselves in my music. I hope it can help people not feel so alone when you feel the most alone.
Asides from the music. You also play at Fulham FC and are an anchor for Match Of The Day. How do you find the time, to balance this all?
It’s difficult. Also trying to be/do normal things with friends & with relationships but it’s hard because whenever I get a second I just want to sleep!
Who are your musical inspirations?
My musical inspiration was Lady Gaga growing up, that’s when I started writing music when she released “Just Dance” it was a moment when my world stopped and I used to sit and watch her interviews in awe. She was just different – I never felt like I fitted in & she showed it was ok to be your true self & no need to conform which just struck up my love for her. She’s the queen!
What advice would you give to any aspiring musicians?
Write. Write. & write some more. Not every song you’ll write will be the one – but just keep writing and believe in what you do. It was a lot of no’s and maybes & a long climb and I’m still climbing. But it’s a beautiful crazy journey I’m on, don’t take yourself too seriously & just do your best. What’s meant to be will be.
If you could have written any song, which would it be and why?
“Can’t Make You Love Me” is for me still one of the most powerful records I’ve ever heard. I also love anything Dolly Parton writes pretty much, but if we’re talking like past few years – Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is gold.
If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive. Who would you pick and why?
John Lennon.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Still making music, writing for my favourite musicians, collaborating with people, still in sport in some way if my football career comes to an end. On tour, happy & healthy!
