The release of ‘Cool With It’ was in the making for three years for the 19-year-old singer/songwriter and producer Lola Moxom. Honoring the success of the breakout single, she takes the track to the next level with a new live version, where she shines as a true performer.

As a rising artist, Lola Moxom opens up about her non-negotiables and the importance of maintaining her authenticity and passion for music. She dives into the intricacies of ‘Cool With It’ and her eternal gratitude for her parents. On October 10th, Lola will take to the stage at The Jazz Cafe to support GRAMMY-nominated R&B star Alex Isley.

Congratulations on your debut single ‘Cool With It.’ How does it feel to have it out for everyone to hear?

I don’t even know where to start or how to answer this, but it feels so surreal and at the same time so amazing to have this song out, because when I first got management, this was one of the first sessions and songs I wrote. It’s such a full circle moment.

You wrote ‘Cool With It’ three years ago, what do you feel reflecting back at the song?

With creating music, you can fall in and out of love with the art as time goes on, but it’s 3 years down the line and I still have the same feeling I got when I first wrote it.

What was the trigger that inspired it?

I was in a new relationship at the time and their ex was trying to cause problems and get them back whilst we were together, and I wasn’t cool with it AT ALL!

Where does your passion for singing and songwriting stem from?

I’ve always been so passionate about music. Whether it’s recording vocals, listening to albums, going to live shows. My parents put me onto really soulful music growing up and it made me fall in love with it.

Who was your biggest role model when growing up?

My parents have always been my role models, I know where they came from and where they are now and I hope one day I can repay them for supporting me and my sister and giving us the life they never got to have.

You’re at the beginning of your career. What were some non-negotiables for what kind of artist you wanted to become?

At the beginning of my career, I had a few non-negotiables that were super important to me in defining the kind of artist I wanted to become. First and foremost, I wanted to work with producers who are also musicians. There’s just something about collaborating with people who understand the intricacies of music, like chord progressions and real musicality, that really inspires me. It’s about creating something that feels genuine and has depth.

Another big thing for me was making sure my music showcases my vocal abilities. I’m hugely inspired by vocalists like Brandy and Tori Kelly, who have such incredible vocal range and technique. I wanted to ensure that my music isn’t vocally dumbed down and that I’m really pushing myself to deliver something powerful and authentic. It’s important for me to stay true to my love for real, soulful singing and not compromise on that. Ultimately, these non-negotiables are about maintaining my authenticity and passion for music. I want to create songs that are not only enjoyable but also meaningful and reflective of my artistic vision.

How are you navigating the current oversaturated state of the industry?

Navigating the current oversaturated state of the industry can be pretty challenging, but I think the main thing for me is being myself and delivering a level of excellence across everything I do. From the music and visuals to my live shows, I want everything to reflect who I am and the high standards I set for myself. Overall, staying authentic and ensuring everything I do is true to myself are the key ways I’m navigating the industry. It might take a bit longer to stand out, but I believe it’s worth it in the long run.

As a Londoner, where do you go when you want to wind down and take your mind off things?

Primrose Hill is my fave place to go to chill, or to be honest, I’m from Kent so sometimes being home and away from London is where I get to relax the most.

Who is your favourite performer and concert you’ve seen?

This is my least favourite question! I’ve loved every concert. I’ve seen Smino a couple times and he’s incredible live, the stage design goes crazy. I also loved seeing Alex Isley at a soulection gig and she can sanggg!! It’s such a full circle moment now I’m supporting her in October too, so I’m very grateful!

What can we expect form you in the future?

You can expect a lot more music, I’m gonna drop so many gems this year. It’s only the start.

What are some themes you would really like to dig deeper into in your songwriting?

There are so many themes I can explore in my songs and songwriting that reflect my experiences and the world around me. Another theme I want to write about is dealing with anxiety. It’s something I personally struggle with, and I know many others do too. Writing songs about my journey with anxiety, the ups and downs, and how I cope could offer comfort and solidarity to listeners who might be going through similar experiences.

I also had someone close to me who went through addiction so that’s also shaped my perspective. I’ve explored themes of pain, resilience, and hope in my songs. It’s about capturing the raw emotions that come with watching someone you love go through such a tough battle and the impact it has on you and your family. Pain, romance, hope, desire… I think there’s loads more I need to delve into and write about. As my life continues and I evolve, so will my songs.

‘Cool With It’ it is out now.
