The mercurial Swedish avant-pop artist REIN draws you into her otherworldly realm on the brand new cut ‘How’s It Gonna Be?’. There are subtle nods to 90s trance and post-punk, where the ethereal quality of REIN’s vocal delivery adds a nostalgic layer to the song, taking you on a trip down memory lane while remaining firmly rooted in the present. Despite citing Robyn, Missy Elliot, Eurythmics, The Prodigy, Depeche Mode, Christine and the Queens, Fever Ray and Kraftwerk as major influences on her musicality, what shines is her mesmeric concoction of gothic alt-pop soaked with modern new wave. The track is hypnotic, REIN’s vocals trickling throughout engulfing the glistening synths whilst the track’s potent message still stands strong. It’s a perfect fusion of past and future, delivering a unique listening experience that’s both familiar and cutting-edge.
Speaking on the track REIN explains, “It’s about the experience of being together with a person that is hot and cold, and the conversations you have with yourself. You know that the relationship is going to end someday but you are still hopeful. I would also say ‘How’s It Gonna Be?’ is the twin of my older song ‘Bruises’, people like it when I sing soft and from the heart. I have produced the beat and the synth strings which gives it some interesting contrasts. I was thinking it would be a mix of future grime and electro.”
REIN’s debut album ‘God Is A Woman’ is due this November and she opens for industrial legends Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb on 2nd and 3rd November in Oslo and Gothenburg.
