With every song, NOANNE injects theatrics, both sonically and visually, and “White Glove” is truly an artistic masterpiece with the songwriter noting Marc Chagall as a big inspiration.
The haunting “White Glove” narrates a melancholy tale of a woman clinging onto a love that is fading into embers. Despite the sad topic, NOANNE has the charm to turn something into a beautiful and magical masterpiece. We step into the world of NOANNE, speaking with the songwriter about her new music, her love for theatrics and her plans for 2024 and beyond.
Hi NOANNE! Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on the release of your stunning new single, “White Glove.” What a great way to kick off the year! Can you tell us what this song means to you?
Thank you for your warm congratulations! The creation of “White Glove” marks a pivotal moment in my artistic journey, offering a window into my soul and the intricate layers of emotions I’ve experienced. This song, co-written with the incredibly talented Gregory Darling, is more than just a melody – it’s a narrative woven from the threads of personal experiences, echoing the ebb and flow of a love that once burned brightly but gradually dimmed. Working with Gregory, whose expertise and sensitivity to the song’s emotional depth were invaluable, allowed me to elevate the track to a realm that truly resonates with the listeners. It’s a reflection of vulnerability, resilience, and the transformative power of love and loss, encapsulated in a harmonious blend of lyrics and melodies that speak to the heart.
Despite the song talking about a fading love, “White Glove” has been described as having a “fairy-tale-like wonder.” Can you explain more about this?
“White Glove” intricately balances the poignant narrative of a diminishing love with an element of mystical, fairy-tale-like wonder, creating a unique emotional tapestry. This contrasting blend stems from the desire to capture the ephemeral beauty and enchantment found in the most profound human experiences. The fairy-tale aspect of the song, inspired by the dreamlike and romantic qualities in Marc Chagall’s works, serves as a metaphor for the magical moments in love that linger, even as the relationship itself fades into memory. It’s about cherishing those fleeting, beautiful instances within a relationship that, despite its inevitable end, continue to cast a spell of wonder and awe. This quality brings a lightness and ethereal touch to the song, offering listeners an escape into a world where love, in all its forms, is celebrated and mourned in the same breath.
The song is also accompanied by a beautiful music video. How important are the visuals to you and can you talk more about the process behind the “White Glove” video?
The visual component of “White Glove” is as crucial as the audio. In the music video, we embraced a simplistic yet deeply symbolic approach. Featuring myself in a candid, almost playful dance, the visuals capture the essence of the song’s emotional spectrum. This dance, seemingly spontaneous and carefree, is in fact a profound representation of the inner turmoil one faces in a fading relationship – a dance between holding on and letting go, between joy and sorrow. Drawing inspiration from Marc Chagall’s “The Kiss,” the video reflects the song’s fairy-tale-like wonder and the lightness of being, even in moments of emotional complexity. The process behind the video was one of careful consideration and collaboration, focusing on how best to visually articulate the song’s narrative, ensuring that every movement and frame contributed meaningfully to the story we were telling.
You’ve expressed how the song is inspired by artist Marc Chagall. Can you delve deeper into this comparison and what it is about his art that influences your sound?
Marc Chagall’s influence on “White Glove” is intricately tied to the song’s conceptual and emotional underpinnings. Chagall’s art, known for its vivid use of color and dreamlike imagery, captures the essence of love and life in a way that transcends reality. His works embody a sense of whimsical romance and emotional depth that I sought to mirror in “White Glove.” Collaborating with Gregory Darling, we aimed to infuse the track with a similar blend of surreal romance and poignant realism, creating a soundscape that is both otherworldly and deeply human. Chagall’s ability to portray love in its many facets – joyous, sorrowful, and everything in between – provided a rich source of inspiration, guiding the song’s lyrical and melodic direction.
Describe “White Glove” in three words.
Ethereal, Heartrending, Enchanting.
As well as music, you work closely in theatre and film and also with AI. If you had to pick just one area to express your creativity, what would it be and why?
Choosing a single medium to express my creativity is a challenging thought, as each one offers unique avenues for artistic exploration. However, if I were to choose, music would be the medium I’d lean towards. Music stands at the crossroads of all forms of art – it is where stories are told, emotions are conveyed, and connections are made. In music, especially in creating songs like “White Glove,” I find the freedom to amalgamate my experiences from theatre, film, and AI into a cohesive and profound form of expression. Music allows me to communicate universally, transcending barriers and touching souls, which is the core of my artistic pursuit.
If you could perform at any venue, what would it be and why?
If given the opportunity to choose a venue for a dream performance, it would undoubtedly be Notre Dame de Paris. The historical and spiritual resonance of Notre Dame, coupled with its architectural grandeur, aligns perfectly with my artistic ethos. Performing there would not just be about the music; it would be about creating a moment in time, a convergence of history, art, and emotion, providing an unparalleled experience for both myself and the audience.
What else does 2024 have in store for NOANNE? Can we expect more releases and any live shows?
The year 2024 is set to be an exciting and transformative period. There are several new music releases on the horizon, each exploring different themes and pushing creative boundaries. Fans can look forward to a blend of soul-stirring melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, continuing the narrative journey started with “White Glove.” Additionally, live shows are a major part of my plan for the year. These won’t just be concerts; they’ll be immersive experiences where music, visual art, and theatrical performance merge to create a unique and captivating spectacle. I’m excited to share these new chapters with my audience and to connect with them through both the recorded tracks and the live performances.
