The mastermind behind Apidae isĀ Greg Hummell. BlendingĀ post-rock and chillwave together, his unique and infectious sound has been lauded by fans and tastemakers alike, and has already made an impression within the music industry.Ā Taking its name from the scientific term for a family of bee species, Apidae grew from humble beginnings as a solo production endeavour into a collaborative venture, recording and performing with a rotating family of musicians, and relocating from its birthplace of Kent to London.
Apidae’s latest offering comes in the form of heartwarming new singleĀ ‘Never Gonna Leave Your Side.’ Featuring grooving basslinesĀ and impactful synths, instrumentally the track is a vibrant and immersive offering. Vocals land softly on top and work hand in glove with well-penned lyrics.Ā
Speaking about the single, he says: āNever Gonna Leave Your Side perhaps best epitomises the album-running sonic theme of natural, pure, organic acoustic instrumentation juxtaposed against very un-human, synthetic sounds and noises. Itās built around a squelchy, sequenced modular synthesiser hook, which squeals away alongside soft, felt piano chords, harmonies from singer-songwriter and collaborator Mazlyn, and a four-to-the-floor, disco groove. The track is lyrically influenced by Don DeLiloās novel āWhite Noiseā, and is about medicating against fears (and the futility of seeking to bury such things). Musically, itās informed by Jai Paul, Jon Hopkins, Sylvan Esso, James Blake.ā
With a growing fanbase and an upcomingĀ album also titled ‘Never Gonna Leave Your Side’,Ā Apidae is an artist to keep your eye on.Ā Ā
