With her love of sweets and anime on full display, Cookiee Kawaii is making waves in the global club/dance world and is sure to leave a lasting impression on the music scene. In a Noctis Magazine interview, we chat with Cookiee about the dance music industry, her place within it and her golden future plans.

Can you tell us a bit about how you got started in the industry and your journey to where you are today?

I was pretty much making music independently for years before I decided to put my music on platforms. Music was always just an artistic expression for me, but with the encouragement of my friends, I just said “why not?” and put my music on streaming platforms. After a year or so, things were going fairly well & poof! “Vibe” went viral on Tiktok. That song basically threw me headfirst into the music industry.

You’ve mentioned that your parents were house DJs, did they have a big influence on your music style growing up?

My parents mainly played Chicago house music which is definitely a major influence in my sound. My mom loves Jill Scott and Sade – she would legit play their songs while I was going to sleep. I feel that this definitely played a major part in how I go about music, whether it’s the house inspo or constantly writing love songs.

“Vibe” was such a viral hit on TikTok and really brought you into the mainstream. Can you tell us what it was like when you first realized how popular it was becoming?

Vibe” going viral was pretty instant for me. I was definitely excited that my song was going viral, but TikTok didn’t have the same tools that it has now for artists to really connect with fans. I was commenting on every video I could, thanking people for using my song, constantly reposting the video on IG or twitter – it was just constant promotion to connect the dots for people and also to get them to realize that it wasn’t a TikTok song but a Jersey Club song.

Your latest album, Club Soda Vol. 3, is so much fun! What was the inspiration behind the album and the title?

Club Soda Vol 3 is the third part in a continuing series I made that basically gives people a glass full of what authentic Jersey Club music feels like. I already have Club Soda Vol. 1&2 so Vol 3 is basically the next elevated version. I’m going to continue the Club Soda series and show how the club sound evolved into multiple different genres of music.

We’re obsessed with the track “Candy” – it’s just so addictive! Can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind that song?

I love “Candy”. With some of my songs, I just go in the studio and freestyle, so when I heard the “Candy” beat, it instantly felt light and airy, and I must’ve been hungry too with the Candy reference, so I just went in that direction. Some songs literally make themselves, especially when you let the music guide you.

Your music is often described as “Jersey club, R&B, and rap” – that’s such a unique blend! How do you approach combining different genres in your music?

I can see how people would feel that I give R&B/ Rap Jersey Club vibes and I love that. Club music is upbeat but it sounds amazing when you add a soft touch to it. When I’m making music, I never wanna put myself in a box. I love all genres of music – it’s not hard to be experimental and combine club music with any genre that comes to mind.

It’s clear that your music resonates with a lot of people. How does it feel to have such a wide and dedicated fanbase?

My Cookiee Monsters. That’s what I call my fans and supporters. But yes, my supporters are great. They’ve gotten me through some of the hardest times and always support whatever I do. It’s honestly a blessing to have people that support you genuinely. It’s also an extreme bonus that I have fans of all ages because it makes me feel that even as I get older, I will still have people that are growing with me and then introducing their parents or children to my music, it’s amazing. Shoutout to my Cookiee Monsters!

We know you love sweets and anime (who doesn’t?!), how do those passions influence your music and your personal style?

I mean, when you think of Cookies or anime it’s very sweet and unexpected. I like to take that same theory and apply it to my music and personal style. I love all things Kawaii, so when you’re inspired by that, you get a person who loves good energy and having a good time. I feel when it comes to my personal style, it definitely depends on my mood, which can be unpredictable (just like filler in anime lol ..).

You’ve accomplished so much in your career already – what are some of your goals for the future?

Some of my main goals are getting my music in video games, anime, even movie soundtracks. I also wanna get into voice acting. I want to do anything that gives my music longevity because if you end up making an opening theme song for a very popular anime series or television series, your music becomes timeless.

Lastly, we always like to ask our favourite artists: what’s one thing about yourself or your music that might surprise your fans?

A lot of my day one fans know this already, but for any of my new fans, you’d be surprised that you can find a lot of my earlier music on SoundCloud, and when I say earlier, I mean before “Vibe”. So if you’re ever interested in going down a Cookiee Kawaii rabbit hole, check out my SoundCloud and you’ll be surprised what you find.
