Getting initial inspiration from Passenger’s busking videos, young Sam Olyott took matters into his own hands and kick-started his dream-chasing journey. Six years on, Olyott unveils his debut single, ‘Cold Toast,’ and regularly blesses his hometown’s Liverpool Church street with authentic live performances.
‘Cold Toast’ being the introduction of Sam Olyott into the music scene, he does seem to have a head start compared to other aspiring artists. His smooth vocals touch upon the ever-so dreaded feeling of being left behind.
This love-lost ballad is only a snippet of Olyott’s debut EP coming later this year. Stream ‘Cold Toast’ and join us at the forefront of Sam Olyott’s more than a promising career.
Could you share where you are at the moment?
I’m currently working in Corfu for a month singing and playing my guitar.
What have you been up to in the last couple of weeks?
In the last couple of weeks I’ve been promoting my debut single Cold Toast whilst also preparing for the launch of my next single ……and packing to go to Corfu!
Any fun plans for the summer?
I’m going to spend as much time with family and friends as possible over the summer when I’m back home! I’ve also been invited to a wedding so can’t wait to dress up for that.
What are you earliest memories connected to music?
My earliest memories connected to music are practicing with my brothers and Dad for Christmas Day in our church. We would sing in front of the packed church congregation together every year and I can vividly remember how hard we worked to make sure everything was perfect! Dad had us singing all sorts of harmonies haha!
What were your early music influences?
Some of my early music influences were Passenger, John Mayer, Donovan Woods .. and my Dad! At the moment I’m loving Khalid, my fave is Better.
Do you remember who initially gave you the idea to try busking at such an early age?
I remember watching countless videos of Passenger busking and just feeling like it’s what I had to be doing! I’m so glad I started that way!!
What do you love the most about busking?
What I love most about busking is the honest audience. If people aren’t drawn to your performance they don’t have to stop and listen but if they are, they can. That’s why it feels so special when you get a big crowd! You know you’ve earned it and that the people are watching because they like what you’re doing!
What are your favourite things about Liverpool?
My favourite things about Liverpool are the kindness and encouraging nature of the people, the banter, the community feel… and the fact that there’s loads to do!
What inspires you to write a song?
Real life inspires me to write songs! All of my songs are based on things I’ve experienced whether it’s a feeling, a thought or something that’s happened.
What is the backstory of your debut single ‘Cold Toast’?
Cold Toast is a song about lost love. It represents the feeling of being left behind. It’s a sad song but still feels positive as it’s got a cool groove to it.. I love it and hope you do too 🙂
What could we expect from you in terms of releases this year?
I’m releasing an EP of 5 tracks this year. All of the songs are special to me and I can’t wait to share them!
What are you manifesting for your career?
I’m hoping to share songs that people still sing 100 years from now. For me it’s all about writing the best songs I can and connecting with people; If that comes with some success then I’ll take it haha!
