Komorebi Finds Healing with ‘No Deal’

Komorebi, the Canadian-Indian polytmath born Tarana Marwah, has mastered the art of turning pain into a soundscape. Nonetheless, with her single ‘No Deal’, she separates herself from those who use music as a moment of catharsis, instead, leaning into the darkness in an angered dissection of those who inflicted the damage. The wounds cut deep, the resentment, deeper.

‘No Deal’ is built on a foundation of barbed electronics and an alternative pop fever dream. The vocal performance sneaks and slips through the haunting, tense tapestry. Komorebi’s voice carries an ancient, studied, accepted ache of something that might have been love, but has now turned bitter. Underpinning that, drums pulse like heartbeats and pianos find a gentler perspective.

Thematically, we are transported to Komorebi’s broken home and the formative loss it represents. It’s no wonder the sonic dynamics feel as they do then. She shares, “It was excruciating to write it, but healing to listen.” The horror and hypnosis, even then, are still able to result in some purification, something the artist finds comfort in and wants to reflect on others: “I hope this song heals others too. It’s important to sing about our lives authentically.”

The moment also marks a visual step forward for Komorebi, as it brings on board one of India’s most renowned artists, Parizad D, to create both the cover art and the accompanying music video. Incorporating crows, rain and the eeriness of an empty space amongst the cues to Komorebi’s childhood, it’s a tainted memory reimagined within an eldritch context.

For Komorebi, the accolades have come pouring, whether it’s getting noted as an up-next one to watch or pushing the boundaries of expression with a first-of-its-kind Unreal Engine music video, and a graphic novel to match.

The magic doesn’t lie in the global festival stages or TV syncs; it lies in her ability to take the abstract and entice it to become more concrete. A storyteller and a creative force, unafraid to go against the crowd.
