Chris Emmanuel has unveiled his debut EP, The Fallout, and with it, he’s documenting his journey, a time capsule for the person he was, and the one he’s become. Born in Guyana, Chris comes from a childhood soundtracked by reggae, dancehall and soca. Later, he would fall in love with 50 Cent and Eminem. After moving to Ontario, Canada, he felt a dissonance trying to fit in, a culture shock that would go on to shape his music as it transformed to a calling.
The Fallout is his most personal project yet. Across its six tracks, he dives into past mistakes, shifting friendships. He explains, “In the process of making this EP, I realised the importance of distancing myself from those who do not contribute positively to my life. I wanted to speak through my friends and showcase our battle in this new age in regards to relationships and heartache. The music is a testament to my resolve to surround myself with those who uplift and inspire me. By setting boundaries, motivating myself and prioritising my well-being, I found strength in moving forward.”
Since his 2021 debut, this kind of EP has been steadily rolling closer, carving out a sound ready for vulnerability and ready for poignance. Each track is short and sweet, delivering its purpose with power, then letting the themes become part of a wider, transformative narrative.
The opener is soulful in musicality, but the performance is intense, meditative and assertive. ‘R.N.D’ dives deeper into this darkness, with synthwave influences sliding down and samples given more room to reverberate. ‘You With Me’, up next, is a highlight of the record. A nostalgic shine that brings Chris out into the light, cracking what has so far been a hardened personality. Optimism arrives, and a friendly charmer is found under the surface.
From here, the EP is brought back down to Earth, balancing assertion with vulnerability, slowly peeling back the layers of the writer’s mindset. The overarching storyline comes into view, the haziness settles into a new atmosphere, one alone but not lonely, confident without aggression. Ultimately, settled.
Chris goes on, “While reflecting on my commitment to self-improvement, I portray the ups and downs of working on myself. The songs serve as a diary of sorts, where I revisit my past transgressions, seeking understanding and forgiveness. Through this musical endeavour, I aim to transform my mistakes into lessons, creating a narrative of redemption and self-awareness.”
At the end of the six-track, with ‘Letting Go’, an era ends. The journey, the transformation feels complete, we leave with a different Chris Emmanuel than the one we arrived with. Amongst the bouncy drums, smooth lyricism, there’s a peace in his words, entering into a new self.
